1943-1964 Born in Wuppertal, Germany. Study & work tour through European countries including Skandinavia, Middle East, India, Canary Islands and West-indian islands. 1965-1967 Worked in Alaska as a commercial artist in a Native Indian's crafts workshop after working as an assistant to a sculptor in New York, before visiting Japan for first time. 1967-1968 Introduced to Master Mr Seisei Suzuki, under whom he trained for 1 year, by Mr Tokuro Katou. He then returned to Germany. During his visit in Japan he visited the 'Living National Treasure' Mr Shoji Hamada, in Mashiko, Tochigi-prefecture. 1968-1970 After half a year ceramic training in Germany he visited Mr Bernard Leach in St.Ives, England. Mr Leach introduced Mr Tatsuzo Shimaoka (later awarded the status of 'Living National Treasure') who is a student of Mr Hamada to him. He then returned to Japan, met Mr Shimaoka who introduced him to the Tsukamoto Pottery where he undertook training of Mashiko-yaki. He then established his own kiln - the first foreigner owned kiln in Mashiko - at the age of 26. Invited as a visiting artist at the University of Hawaii, for a one man show at: Daisy’s Gallery, Honolulu. 1971-1973 Awarded with the Education Minister Prize and First in the Mainichi News Japan ceramic art competition in Tokyo. Participated in “Modern Japanese Ceramic Art” tour exhibition at Vancouver Art Gallery (Canada), Seattle Art Museum, Cornell University Museum, Ithaca NY and Cleveland Art Museum (USA) organized by the Japan Ministry of Foreign affairs, cultural agency Tokyo. Met Kieko in Tokyo, whom he married. 1974-1979 Shimaoka Tatsuzo + Gerd Knäpper at Arts and Crafts Museum in Hamburg (Germany). Opening exhibition for New Goethe Institute (South Korea). Rükyu Shimpo 90th anniversary Show (Okinawa,Japan). Gerd Knäpper wurde 1943 in Wuppertal geboren und ließ sich nach einigen Wanderjahren, unter anderem durch Europa und die USA, Ende der 60er Jahre in Japan nieder, das bis zu seinem Tod seine Heimat und Wirkungsstätte bleiben sollte.
Hier erlebte er auch schon früh seinen Durchbruch als Künstler - nach Lehrjahren bei verschiedenen japanischen Töpfermeistern konnte Knäpper bereits 1968 in Mashiko, dem Mekka der zeitgenössischen Keramik, seine eigene Werkstatt gründen. 1971 wurde ihm eine ganz besondere Ehre zuteil: Bei einem nationalen Wettbewerb traditioneller japanischer Keramik, bei dem die Arbeiten anonym eingereicht wurden, gewann Knäpper unter 500 eingereichten Werken den 1. Preis - eine bedeutende Würdigung für einen Europäer. 
Es folgten weitere Anerkennungen auf zahlreichen Ausstellungen sowie hochrangige Auszeichnungen, beispielsweise der Preis des japanischen Ministerpräsidenten 1986. Auch in Deutschland genoss Knäpper höchstes Ansehen für sein Werk und wurde 1991 für sein Engagement als Vermittler zwischen den Kulturen Japans und Deutschlands mit dem Bundesverdienstkreuz ausgezeichnet. Nachdem seine Kunst in zahlreichen Museen weltweit gezeigt wurde, konnte er mit der "Gerd Knäpper Tarosaka Gallery" in der Präfektur Ibaraki 2007 sein eigenes Museum eröffnen.
Dabei sah Knäpper sich selbst weder als ausschließlich japanischen noch als deutschen Künstler, sondern bemühte sich mit seinen Arbeiten in der Keramikkunst eine Brücke der Verständigung zwischen Osten und Westen zu schlagen. Die deutsche Botschaft war mit Gerd Knäpper seit Jahrzehnten persönlich und durch sein künstlerisches Schaffen verbunden und wird ihm ein ehrendes Gedenken bewahren. Am 2. November 2012 ist der Keramikkünstler Gerd Knäpper in seiner japanischen Wahlheimat verstorben. Er engagierte sich zeitlebens als Brückenbauer zwischen seinen beiden Ländern, Japan und Deutschland, und ihren jeweiligen Kulturen. Seine vielfältigen Werke waren inspiriert von diesen beiden Quellen und bildeten daraus eine Symbiose.
