Lies Cosijn

An important ceramic wall plastic showing Pandora. Pandora (her name can mean bearer of all gifts, or possessor of all gifts or even all talents) is in Greek mythology the name of the first woman that Hephaistos formed from water and earth. She was sent by Zeus to the mortals to inflict punishment on them after Prometheus had stolen fire from heaven with the intention of saving them from their ill-fated position.  Underneath the arches we see a group of fearful people and on the left is Pandora, who could not contain her curiosity and opened the jar. Thus releasing all of the disasters and troubles which quickly spread all over the Earth: putting an end to mankind’s carefree existence. Pandora made an attempt to close the lid of the jar, but not until only ‘hope’ still remained inside the jar. Because of this, even when the people on Earth suffer the most terrible of disasters, hope is always there to comfort and sustain them. This object is not suitable for superstitious persons! Chamotte earthenware, sculpted, scratched-in, drawn, gleaming sinter engobe. The piece can best be shown to full advantage when hanging from hooks fixed to a wall or in the iron stand as shown in the picture. For additional information and photograps of this Prestige Collection object, please request an object card by e-mail.

Lies Cosijn, een belangrijke keramische muurplastiek met de voorstelling van Pandora. Pandora (haar naam kan zowel draagster van alle gaven als schenkster van alle gaven of albegaafde betekenen), is in de Griekse mythologie de naam van de eerste vrouw, die door Hephaistos werd gevormd uit water en aarde. Zij werd door Zeus aan de stervelingen als straf gezonden om onheil over hen te brengen, nadat Prometheus vuur uit de hemel gestolen had, met het doel om de mensen uit hun ongelukkige toestand te verlossen. Onder bogen zien wij rechts een groep angstige mensen en links Pandora, die haar nieuwsgierigheid niet kon bedwingen en het vat opende. Toen kwamen daar alle rampen, ziekten en zorgen uit tevoorschijn en verspreidden zich over de aarde: aan het kommerloze bestaan van de mensen was een einde gekomen. Pandora wilde nog gauw het deksel dichtklappen, maar alleen de hoop zat nog in het vat toen het weer gesloten werd. Vandaar dat onder de hevigste rampen die de mensen op aarde teisteren de hoop hun nog altijd bijblijft. Het stuk is niet geschikt voor mensen met bijgeloof. Chamotte aardewerk, geboetseerd, ingekrast, getekend, glanzende sinter engobe. Dit stuk wordt geleverd in een metalen frame, waardoor het iets 'zwevend' kan staan op een sokkel, maar evengoed kan hangen aan de muur.
