One of the greatest contributions to ceramics has been the ceramic plate, which Oosterman has been working on since 1971. These large gulfed ceramic plates and cylindrical rolls were developed through the independence of the decoration of the thrown pot.  These sheets, initially made of stoneware, were painted with a dream-like, often difficult to define theme. One might be erotic and another one might be more abstract. The plate offered here, ‘The Heron’, is considered to be one of the most important works that the artist produced in 1970. The 68 cm high object has been mainly painted on the left-hand side with some of Oosterman’s familiar themes, such as herons and other birds, insects, women and bicycles in a beautiful, somewhat watery atmosphere. Jan Oosterman (1911-1996) developed from being an important Dutch ceramist and potter in earthenware utility objects (1945-1949) to becoming artist of unica vases and bowls and monumental ceramics (1950-1967). Een van de grootste bijdragen aan de keramiek was het keramische blad, waar Oosterman vanaf 1971 aan gewerkt heeft. Deze grote golvende platen en cylindrische rollen ontstonden vanuit het verzelfstandigen van de decoratie van de gedraaide pot. Deze platen, in eerste instantie van steengoed, werden beschilderd met een dromerig, vaak moeilijk te duiden thema, de ene keer erotisch, een andere keer meer abstract. Het hier aangeboden blad ‘De reiger’ wordt beschouwd als één van de belangrijkste werken die de kunstenaar rond 1970 heeft uitgevoerd. Het 68 cm hoge object is voornamelijk aan de linkerzijde beschilderd met de bekende thema’s van Oosterman, zoals reigers en andere vogels, insecten, vrouwen en fietsen in een prachtige, wat waterige sfeer.

Jan Oosterman (1911-1996) ontwikkelde zich als belangrijke Nederlandse keramist van pottenbakker van gebruiksaardewerk (1945-1949) tot kunstenaar van unica vazen en schalen en monumentale keramiek (1950-1967). Na 1967 ontstaan de echte vrije plastische vormen. De keramische boekjes, de tenten en het keramische blad.
