Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk (Lucebert) was born on 15 September 1924 in Amsterdam. In 1938 he briefly attended the Quellinus School of Arts and Crafts. From 1942 to 1947 he performs forced labour in Wittenberg (DE). From 1947 to 1948 he stayed in Paris. Swaanswijk lived in Amsterdam from 1948 to 1953. His first exhibition of drawings followed in 1948. In 1949 he participates in the first large Cobra exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Between 1951 and 1959 he published seven books of poetry. In 1955 Lucebert stays in East Berlin at the invitation of Bertold Brecht with a literary tip pendium. In 1968 he is awarded the highest literature prize in the Netherlands. Between 1954 and 1993 Lucebert lives and works in Bergen (nh). At the end of his life, between 1990 and 1994, he develops ceramic activities in the studio of the Droysen-Keramik gallery in Berlin. Lucebert dies on 10 May 1994 in Alkmaar.
